Objective/Goals: This lesson is designed to introduce students to appreciate the large and small aspects in nature.
Materials: Pictures of various nature scenes such as mountains, the ocean, a creek, river, lake, stream, trees, etc., crayons, drawing paper.
Anticipatory Set: Teacher will write the word “Nature” on the board. Teacher says “Nature” and asks children to repeat the word. Teacher will ask children to share with their neighbor what they think nature is and items in nature. Teacher will ask children to share the words they learned from their neighbor and write them on the board. Review the words out loud. Show children the pictures, one at a time, and ask them to say what is in the picture, with hands raised. Write responses on the board.
Ask children to discuss with their neighbor the things they enjoy in nature. When they are done talking, ask children to share their neighbor’s answers. Write on board.
Show children the pictures of Bluebear in nature. Ask children to share their ideas about Bluebear and write on the board.
Direct Instruction: Teacher will say “Children, I am going to share with everyone what I appreciate and enjoy in nature. Teacher draws a picture of a tree and a book, for example. “I enjoy sitting under a tree when it is sunny and relax reading a book”. “What things can you think of that would let you relax while enjoying nature?” List some ideas to help prompt children who cannot think of any ideas.
Guided Practice: In groups or pairs, ask children to create a montage of pictures of other things they believe Bluebear would enjoy doing in nature, like putting his feet in the water, feeding birds, walking on the beach, or smelling flowers.
Independent Practice: Ask students to draw a picture of what they do to relax and appreciate nature. Leave pictures and words up so that children can have prompts. Children will draw pictures. Ask children to write a sentence to describe their picture. For children who cannot write, they can talk about their picture when they present to the class.
Extended Activity: For a home assignment, ask children to draw pictures, with their family, of what they do with their family to enjoy and relax in nature. Children can share their pictures with the class.
